Lowry, Salford: It's a rather wonderful thing that the fast rising Manchester International Festival - recently added to the list of the arts council's RFOs - can embrace both a genuinely populist piece of theatre-making, such as Victoria Wood's That Day We Sang, and also a frequently perverse but utterly compelling slice of alternative, experimental theatre, such as the fragmentary biographical collage The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic.
