Royal Exchange, Manchester: It's a patently ridiculous set-up - the honeymooning Amanda spies her ex-husband Elyot also enjoying some post-marriage relaxation with his new wife on the next balcony. Within two minutes they've decided to run away together. Much hilarity ensues. But the beauty of Coward's greatest play is not only that it remains very funny. Coward was interested in relationships, too, and how love can very quickly turn to hate.
