Britten Theatre, London: Handel's opera was an enormous success for English National Opera back in 1985 in a production by Nicholas Hytner that returned again and again, partly because it successfully negotiated the feat of transferring Handel's ironic comedy from its setting in the ancient world to a new context. The problem with James Conway's new English Touring Opera production, designed by Sarah Bacon, is that its period transfer doesn't work.
